Trumbull High School To Reopen After Flood Damage

The Trumbull Health Department has given the green light to reopen the doors of Trumbull High School after it was closed due to flooding damage as a result of the recent rash of thunderstorms to strike the area.

Earlier this week, the school flooded, as Mother Nature dropped more than seven inches of rain in the area, forcing officials to cancel classes for several days as crews performed cleanup efforts in the building.

According to school officials, on Sept. 26 and 27, the Trumbull Health Department health inspector and health director were on hand to observe cleanup efforts that are taking part at the school. They noted that “based on our observations, all CDC recommendations for flood water damage are being taken.”

The school has been closed since Wednesday, but has been given the go-ahead to reopen on Monday, Oct. 1.

Among the steps professional property damage cleanup and reconstruction company JP Maguire are taking includes:

  • Drying processes including the use of fans, air conditioning and dehumidifiers;
  • Porous materials contaminated by flood waters, such as drywall and carpeting, are being removed and replaced;
  • Hard surfaces are being cleaned and sanitized;
  • The kitchen area has been cleaned and sanitized. Food, paper goods and equipment were not affected by the flood, as they were stored more than a foot off the floor. Food contact surfaces were not impacted, but will be sanitized prior to being used.

According to Rhonda Capuano, the Trumbull Director of Health, “(they) were very impressed by the proactive preventative cleanup efforts taking place at the school. Since the affected parts of the school do not impact instructional areas of the school, I see no problem in opening the school while the remediation continues.”
