The performance was part of a ceremony celebrating the Week of the Young Child, a week of activities designed to raise awareness for early childhood education and kindergarten registration.

“The goal of the week is to highlight the importance of early childhood development for both for parents and professionals,” Bridget Fox, a vice president with the United Way of Western Connecticut, told the Daily Voice.

Fox said her organization was helping to promote the new kindergarten registration system for the city. Parents should take advantage of the district’s new online registration system and register their children soon, she said.

“We’re really trying to engage parents now if they have a 4-year-old who will be 5 coming into kindergarten. That’s the key to their child’s success — that they are registered that they get there on the first day of school and are ready to learn.”

Fox said on-time registration also helps the school district prepare for the upcoming school year.

“The sooner the school system has an idea of how many children are coming into school next fall, the better prepared they will be,” she said.

The week has been celebrated in Stamford for about a decade. It’s a part of national effort started by the National Association of the Education of Young Children, she said.

“We make it local in Stamford by celebrating this week in April, but it’s happening all over the country,” Fox said

Throughout the week, numerous activities will be held around Stamford. The Ferguson Library held a story hour Tuesday as part of the celebration, for example.

In addition to the week of activities, Fox said the United Way provides backbone support for childhood education in the Stamford community, including hosting kindergarten transition nights.
