The crash happened on the northbound side near Exit 51 in East Haven at about 11:10 a.m., state police told NBC Connecticut.
Trooper First Class Kelly Grant said one person was confirmed dead and several others had been transported to hospitals for non-life-threatening injuries, the Connecticut Post reported.
The highway was closed for a while, and then two lanes were blocked, according to the state Department of Transportation. As all lanes reopened at about 3 p.m., backups of over 9 miles were reported back to the Milford area, DOT said.
The fatality was believed to be the first of the July 4 weekend in Connecticut.
