A Connecticut man is set to spend nearly a decade behind bars for robbery and weapon charges dating back to an incident more than two years ago.

New Haven resident Shaquille Richardson, 25, has been sentenced to 117 months in prison, followed by five years of supervised release after pleading guilty to one count of Hobbs Act Robbery and one count of carrying a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence earlier this year.

Shortly before 1:45 a.m. on June 30, 2016, officers from the New Haven Police Department were dispatched to Ferry Street, where there were reports of a man who had been shot. Upon arrival at the scene, police said that the officers found two victims, one who was shot in his left elbow and was bleeding, the other who was bleeding from his nose.

According to police, the investigation determined that Richardson and his co-conspirator, Thomas Johnson, attacked two people after they exited a convenience store in an effort to steal marijuana and money from them. During the scuffle, Johnson shot one of his victims and Richardson struck the other in the face with his gun.

Richardson was arrested at the scene of the robbery. U.S. Attorney John Durham noted that when he was apprehended, Richardson was bleeding from a gash in his hand after one of his victims sliced him with a knife in self-defense. Johnson was arrested on July 28 that year during a traffic stop. At the time of his arrest, Johnson was in possession of the gun he used during the robbery.

Richardson pleaded guilty in court on July 31 this year. Johnson pleaded guilty to similar charges in April and was sentenced to 156 months in prison.
