Maffei Steps Down As Trumbull High Football Coach After Tough Season

TRUMBULL, Conn. — After 19 seasons, Bob Maffei has resigned as the head football coach at Trumbull High School, according to the Connecticut Post.

Maffei, 62, said it was a mutual decision after his team's poor performance on the field with a record of 3-7 and players' misbehavior off the field, with a half-dozen suspensions and the arrest of four players who were expelled, the Post said.

At the start of his career, he coached at both Fairfield Warde and Fairfield Prep. Maffei then became an assistant at Trumbull, working under legendary coach Jerry McDougall for 16 years.

Maffei was promoted to head coach after McDougall retired in 1998.

His overall record is 126-77, and his team won the FCIAC championship in 2005 and was the runner-up in both the FCIAC and Class LL in 2010, according to the Connecticut Post.

Maffei graduated from Fairfield Warde High School in Fairfield, where he was the captain of the baseball and football teams. He earned a bachelor's in physical education from Yankton College, where he again played baseball and football, and a master's degree in education from Fairfield University.
