STAMFORD, Conn. — Former U.S. Sen. Joe Lieberman is one of four candidates for FBI director who are meeting with President Donald Trump on Wednesday, according to The Hill.

Lieberman, a Stamford resident and native, was Al Gore's running mate on the 2000 Democratic ticket for president. Lieberman was a U.S. senator from Connecticut from Jan. 3, 1989, to Jan. 3, 2013. He was a Democrat, but became an independent after losing the primary for the U.S. Senate in 2006.

Lieberman, 75, has never worked for the FBI nor as a judge or prosecutor, which are usual paths to the post of FBI director, according to The Hill.

Lieberman, who also served as the Connecticut attorney general, endorsed Hillary Clinton in the 2016 presidential election.

Trump will also meet with acting FBI chief Andrew McCabe, former Oklahoma Gov. Frank Keating and former top FBI official Richard McFeely, according to The Hill.

Trump fired James Comey, a former Westport resident and Bridgewater Associates lawyer, last week as the FBI was investigating Russian ties to the presidential election.
