Incumbent Vavrek Wins 4th Term As First Selectman In Monroe

MONROE, Conn. -- First Selectman Steve Vavrek grabbed another term as first selectman in Monroe with a narrow victory Tuesday over Democrat Dan Hunsberger.

Vavrek, a Republican, won a fourth term with nearly 2,400 votes, according to unofficial results. Hunsberger received more than 1,900 votes.

Vavrek defeated Hunsberger in the 2013 election by about 17 percent. This year’s result was far closer, with Vavrek getting about 55 percent of the vote.

Vavrek, who left a career in sales, previously served on the Town Council, Board of Finance and Parks and Recreation Commission in Monroe.

In other races Tuesday in Monroe, winners included: 

  • Tax Collector: Emanuel Cambra, Jr./Republican
  • Town Treasurer: Deborah Heim
  • Town Clerk: Vida V. Stone
