Wilton Police were investigating a July 15 shoplifting incident at the CVS where $2,602 in items had been stolen. In reviewing the store's security video, officers noticed two suspicious women and then noticed that there was a third female standing nearby and wondered whether she was connected to the other two, police said.
They were able to identify that woman and called her about the shoplifting case, Wilton Police Lt. Stephen Brennan said.
But the woman had a surprise for the investigating officer: No, she didn't know the other women, but yes she had been shoplifting on her own, she told the surprised officer.
"We had to take a second case number out on a new larceny that we just learned of from her own admission," Brennan said.
"She admitted to taking an energy drink and a bottle of coricidin," Brennan said. The items were worth about $11. Coricidin is an over-the-counter medication for colds.
Nicole Yost, 34, of 33 Georgetown Road, Weston, was charged with sixth-degree larceny.
Meanwhile, police have also identified one of the two women who they believe are part of a ring that has hit at least 26 CVS locations throughout the metro New York area and Pennsylvania, Brennan said.
When Wilton Police sent out photos of the suspects and information about the case a police agency in Pennsylvania recognized one of the suspects who is a resident of that state. The woman is in custody in Pennsylvania and Wilton Police are seeking her extradition. She and her confederate allegedly stole 17 packages of Crest white strips, 67 packages of Nexium, 12 packages of Prilosec along with some other items valued at $2,602 Brennan said.
Nexium and Prilosec are used for heartburn relief.
