TRUMBULL, Conn. — A 57-year-old Bridgeport man was arrested shortly after police say he shoved a security officer at the Westfield Trumbull Mall and ran off with $1,300 worth of merchandise before crashing his car in Bridgeport.

The incident happened Sunday at around 5:30 p.m. Police said Dennis Stewart of Bridgeport shoved the security officer while they were attempting to stop him from fleeing the JC Penney with the stolen merchandise. Stewart then ran to his car, and once inside he drove toward another security officer, who had to jump out of the way, police said.

Stewart nearly hit several pedestrians and other vehicles as he sped out of the mall parking lot, according to police.

Trumbull Police pursued Stewart has he left the mall via the Main Street exit ramp. He ignored officers for several miles as he crossed into Bridgeport, police said. Officers discontinued the pursuit.

A short time later, Bridgeport Police reported that Stewart had crashed his car near Noble Avenue and Hawthorne Street and fled on foot, police said. He was caught by Trumbull Police nearby a short time later and taken into custody.

Inside his car, police found drug paraphernalia and a small amount of white powder that tested positive for cocaine, police said.

Stewart was charged with third-degree robbery, fourth-degree larceny, possession of narcotics, interfering with police and a number of motor vehicle charges. He is being held on a $50,000 bond.
