Stamford Man, 89, Known For His Garden, Killed While Crossing High Ridge

STAMFORD, Conn. — Police have identified the man who died after he was struck by a Prius late Thursday while crossing a road in Stamford, but was not releasing his name until his extended family was notified, according to the Stamford Advocate. 

An 89-year-old Stamford man was killed late Thursday when he was hit by a car while he was crossing High Ridge Road near Burger King. The man, whose name has not been released by police, was not in a crosswalk.

Neighbors said it was an 89-year-old man who lives in the area and is known for maintaining beautiful gardens on his property, the Advocate said.  

The fatal accident occurred at 11:25 p.m. on High Ridge Road near Olga Drive on a retail section of the busy road near the Merritt Parkway, Stamford police said,

A 2008 Toyota Prius traveling north on High Ridge Road hit the unidentified man, who was crossing High Ridge Road from west to east near the Burger King, police said.

The man, who was not in a crosswalk, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. He was not carrying any identification, and it took many hours for Stamford Police to identify him.

The driver of the Prius is a 65-year-old Stamford resident who stayed at the scene and was cooperating with police. 

Neighbors said the man who died was known for getting coffee grinds from a nearby diner to cultivate his garden and for collecting bottles from a nearby diner, the Advocate said. 

The Stamford Police Department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad is investigating the accident.
