BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — The suspect in a violent armed robbery at a clothing store was arrested after exchanging gunshots with a Bridgeport police officer on Thursday morning, police said.
A 911 caller at 9:35 a.m. Thursday reported the EbLens store at 586 Pequonnock St. was being robbed, police said.
A Bridgeport police officer, who was working an outside job at a major water main break at the nearby intersection of Park and North avenues, spotted the suspect as he came out of EbLens, police said.
As the officer gave chase, the suspect, who was wearing a mask, turned and fired at him, police said.
The officer returned fire, and with the help of other responding units, apprehended the suspect, identified as Jachim Brown, 27, police said.
Officers recovered nearly $1,900 in stolen money, the firearm used to shoot at the officer, the mask worn during the robbery, and the shell casing from Brown's gun, police said.
Brown sustained a minor injury that does not appear to be the result of a gunshot, police said.
During a post-arrest interview, Brown admitted to the robbery and to firing at the officer, police said.
At the time of the robbery, the store was occupied by two female employees, police said. They told officers that Brown entered the store and dragged one of the women to the rear of the store by her hair while holding them at gunpoint and demanding money.
The Detective Bureau is investigating whether other suspects were involved in the robbery.
Detectives are also exploring whether Brown is linked to other similar crimes in the area. The Connecticut Post said Brown may be connected to the Tuesday armed robbery at BAR in Stratford , where the bartender, Regi Woodard, was shot in the abdomen. A GoFundMe has been started to help Woodard , who has undergone two surgeries at Bridgeport Hospital.
Brown is facing robbery and weapons charges as well as attempted murder of an officer, police said. He was held on $1 million bond.
The nearby Geraldine Johnson Elementary and Columbus School were placed in lock-in lock-out during the incident, according to the Post.
The robbery occurred near the intersection of North Avenue and Park Avenue, where work has been underway since a water main break on Monday afternoon.
