Milford Woman Charged In Connection With Theft From Stratford Cemetery

STRATFORD, Conn. -- A man accused of stealing urns from a Stratford cemetery last summer told police that he did it because he was possessed by a Milford woman, who has now also been charged after being implicated by a witness, according to the Connecticut Post.

Police discovered a vault at Union Cemetery in Stratford had been smashed open and 18 urns were taken.

On June 23, 2016 police were called to Union Cemetery in Stratford on a report that somebody had smashed a vault and stolen 18 urns containing ashes, according to police. Eventually the investigation led to 36-year-old Aneudy Davila of the Bronx, who was arrested last month and charged with interference with a cemetery, criminal mischief and sixth-degree larceny.

Davila had stayed silent on the matter, until he eventually told police that he had been possessed by a Santeria priestess from Milford, according to the Connecticut Post. He said that after the priestess, identified as 40-year-old Janette Mateo, practiced Santeria on him, she made him go to the cemetery and steal the urns, the Connecticut Post reported.

Police searched Mateo's home and were unable to find the urns, but did find dead chickens and other items related to Santeria, according to the Connecticut Post. She denied being involved in the theft of the urns, but a witness who lived with her at the time of the theft told police that they had seen Mateo  and Davila bringing in trash bags with metal containers last year, the Connecticut Post reported.

Meteo was charged with conspiracy to commit interference with a cemetery and released on a $1,000 bond, the Connecticut Post reported.
