The man was identified as Jose Diaz by his ex-wife Michelle Soriano, who said he knew his way around on boats, LoHud.com reported.

Diaz was pulled from the water early Sunday after about an hour of searching, Stamford fire officials said. He was pronounced dead at Stamford Hospital.

The other people on the boat noticed Diaz was missing from the 38-foot cabin cruiser as they approached the docks in Stamford Harbor, Stamford Fire Capt. Philip Hayes said in a statement. They had traveled from Westchester.

Stamford fire, police, and EMS were dispatched at 11:25 p.m. Saturday night, Hayes said, with help from the U.S. Coast Guard, Greenwich Police, and Darien Police.

The crew on the Stamford Fire Department’s Engine 1 noticed a reflective object in the water off the public dock behind John Boccuzzi Park off Southfield Avenue, Hayes said.

The Stamford fire boat went to the location and found Diaz at 12:38 a.m. Sunday, Hayes said. He was pulled from the water and the crew began resuscitative efforts, he said.

He was transported by Stamford EMS to Stamford Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The autopsy is not yet complete, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Connecticut said Monday, so no official cause of death was available.

Soriano said she was unable to get information from authorities about the name of the boat, the owner or any of the people who were on board as she tried to find out more about what happened, LoHud.com said.

Diaz, who had three adult daughters and three grandchildren, worked at a scrap metal yard in Port Chester, N.Y., LoHud.com said.
