Police responded to the area of 449 Grasmere Ave. at around 6:51 p.m. Friday on a report that a pickup truck had crashed into right next to the equipment at a preschool playground, which was empty because school was out, the Fairfield Sun reported.

According to police, the preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle, which was driven by the 54-year-old Fairfield resident, was traveling north on Grasmere Avenue near Home Depot when it went off the right side of the roadway and struck a Greater Bridgeport Transit sign that was positioned on the sidewalk.

It then continued on Grasmere Avenue, crossing over the center of the road and into a lane of oncoming traffic, police said. It entered the driveway of 433 Grasmere Ave., where it struck a second vehicle, which was parked an unoccupied, police said. It pushed the second vehicle 90 degrees before it came to a rest facing south, according to police.

The pickup then continued on, striking portions of chain link and vinyl fencing around 449 Grasmere Ave., police said. It also struck a guide wire to a utility pole with such force that the top third of the pole was severed, according to police. The vehicle then finally came to a rest.

The driver was taken to St. Vincent's Medical Center, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said. The crash is currently under investigation by the Fairfield Police Crash Reconstruction Unit.
