Fire crews responded to the scene of the burning white cargo van, which was just north of the Burr Street overpass, according to a Facebook post.

The right lane was closed, with traffic inching by in the left lane, as firefighters doused the flames, first with a dry chemical extinguisher and then with a hose line.

Use of the fire extinguisher slowed down the spread of the fuel-fed fire in the engine, buying time for the hose line to get in place, firefighters said.

Crews from Engine 5 and Ladder 2 then quickly put out the van fire with a hose line.

Firefighters from the Westport Fire Department provided backup.

No injuries were reported. Two people were already safely out of vehicle when firefighters arrived at the scene.
