DUI Suspect Tried To Take Monroe Officer's Weapon, Police Say

MONROE, Conn. -- A Newtown driver pulled over by police after nearly causing a crash on Route 25 in Monroe tussled with the arresting officer and now faces several charges, according to the Monroe Courier.

A 73-year-old Newtown man faces multiple charges -- including trying to grab the arresting officer's gun -- after he was pulled over on Route 25 in Monroe recently, police told the Monroe Courier.

Dennis Shanchuk, 73, who was arrested on Friday, Jan. 15, was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol and with interfering with an officer, among other things, the Monroe Courier said.

Police told the Monroe Courier that Shanchuk had tried to snatch the officer’s gun during his arrest.
