Drunken Driver Hits, Seriously Injures 2 Pedestrians In Norwalk, Police Say

UPDATED: NORWALK, Conn. — A drunken driver was arrested after hitting and seriously injuring two pedestrians in Norwalk early Wednesday, police said in social media posts.

The accident happened on West Avenue at about 1:05 a.m., near Orchard Street, police said. A vehicle had struck two pedestrians and a parked car in the area, police said.

"NPD Crash Investigators investigated a car vs 2 pedestrian accident early this morning on West Avenue," police said on Instagram and Twitter. "Both victims were transported to Norwalk Hospital with serious injuries." 

The driver, Walter Veliz, 31, of 8 Woodbury Ave., Norwalk, was found uninjured at the scene, police said.  

Veliz, who does not possess a driver’s license, failed field sobriety tests at the scene and was placed under arrest, police said. He was transported to police headquarters, where he was found to have a blood alcohol level of .1852, more than twice the legal limit, police said.

Veliz was charged with two counts of second-degree assault with a motor vehicle, driving under the influence, operating without a license, failure to drive in the proper lane and reckless driving, police said.

He was held on $75,000 bond.
