The Westport Fire Department was dispatched to 399 Post Road W. at 4:30 p.m. on a report of a motor vehicle accident with injuries.

Engine 4, Engine 2, Rescue 3 and an assistant chief responded. The Norwalk Fire Department also responded with one engine and a shift commander to the incident, which is right on the border of the two towns.

The first arriving units found a car that had slammed into a utility pole, with one person still trapped inside, according to Westport fire officials. There was significant intrusion into the driver's side of the car due to the impact with the pole, and the driver, whose legs were trapped, required extrication.

A protective hose line was stretched by Engine 4 while Rescue 3 and Engine 2 set up to extricate the driver using hydraulic rescue tools. The driver was removed from the car and placed into EMS care.

Eversource was notified of the damage to the pole and responded to check the utilities. Fire department units cleared the scene at 5:32 p.m. once the car had been removed from the scene.

"We would like to remind everyone to make sure that their seat belts are securely fastened prior to driving or riding in a vehicle," the Westport Fire Department said in a statement. "Children should not sit in the front seas until at least age 13. All young children should be securely fastened in the rear of the vehicle in the appropriate car safety sear."
