Maine Game Wardens had responded to a call for a possible drowning at about 10 p.m. Thursday, the Sun Journal said. Christopher Hughes, 52, became separated while out on the pond in Raymond, Maine, with a friend in separate canoes, the Sun Journal said.

The overturned canoe was found early Friday, and then Hughes, who was not wearing a lifejacket, was located in 16 feet of water by divers, the Sun Journal said.

Officials were investigating whether alcohol or a medical condition played a role in the drowning, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Hughes and his co-workers were staying at a camp in Raymond while working construction in New Hampshire, the Press Herald said.
