Anny Castillo, 22, was arrested Thursday and appeared in Danbury Superior Court for arraignment Friday on charges of abandonment of a child under the age of 6 years, risk of injury, and cruelty to persons.
Castillo told police that she didn't believe she could care for the baby so she put the baby outside in the hopes that someone would find him and take care of him, the News-Times said. She told police that she did not know about the state's Safe Haven Law, which allows babies up to 30 days old to be dropped off at any hospital , no questions asked.
She left the baby, wrapped in her clothing, between air-conditioning units behind the Zaytuna Grocery on Main Street near her home — and a block from the police station, the News-Times said.
Superior Court Judge Thomas Welch issued a protective order that prevents Castillo from having any contact with her son, who is “healthy and thriving" in the custody of the state and a foster family, the News-Times said.

The baby was found at 11:38 p.m. Sunday, May 21, and taken to the neonatal care unit at Danbury Hospital for care.
Officers began a search for the mother of the baby, and five days later she walked into the lobby of the Danbury Police Department.
The mother, later identified as 22-year-old Anny Castillo of Danbury, was taken to Danbury Hospital for treatment. Police later obtained a warrant for her arrest.
After her court appearance Friday, she was released on $1,500 bond and is due in court again Aug. 16.
