Derby Man Killed, Five Injured In Seymour Car Crash

SEYMOUR, Conn. -- A 20-year-old Derby man was killed and five more people were injured when a car crashed into a utility pole in Seymour Tuesday, according to Fox 61.

The person killed was identified as Shyheim Samuel of Derby, according to Fox 61. The other five people in the car were all between 14 and 20 and came from Bridgeport and Derby, Fox 61 reported.

The accident occurred at around 9:30 p.m. in the area of 11 Rimmon St., Fox 61 reported. Officials told Fox 61 that when responders arrived, the car was on its roof and surrounded by the cracked utility pole and live wires. The accident knocked out power to more than 400 people Tuesday night, though that had been reduced to around 8 by early Wednesday morning, according to Fox 61.

First responders had to work around the live wires to free the occupants of the car, according to Fox 61. The five survivors all suffered serious injuries, some of which were lief-threatening, Fox 61 reported. They were taken to hospitals in Bridgeport, New Haven and Waterbury, according to Fox 61.

The cause of the accident is under investigation, though police told Fox 61 that speed was a factor in the accident.
