Michael Karolkowski was charged with first-degree arson, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree breach of peach and interfering with an officer, police said. He was held on $250,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court April 17.
Shelton Fire Department responded to the structure fire started in the basement of a New Street home around 3 p.m. Sunday. All occupants got out safely, and no injuries were reported.
While firefighters were responding, an area resident told police a man came to their house and and said he had just lit the house on fire, police said.
Officers found the man, identified as Karolkowski, walking down Howe Avenue, police said. He would not comply with their orders and was taken into custody on unrelated charges, police said.
After the fire was out, detectives and officers from the Shelton Fire Marshal’s Office and the Connecticut State Police Fire and Investigation Unit did an investigation and charged Karolkowski in the house fire, police said.
