Cause Of Large Junkyard Fire In Milford Under Investigation

MILFORD, Conn. -- Nobody was injured when a fire broke out at an auto recycling yard in Milford that took several hours to put Tuesday afternoon, according to the Stratford Star.

The smoke from the fire at Milford Auto Recycling on South Washington Street could be seen for miles, and filled the air with the odor of burnt chemicals, the Stratford Star reported. Calls for the large fire came in after it erupted just after 3 p.m., and firefighter crews from Stratford, New Haven and West Haven were called to assist, according to the Stratford Star.

When firefighters arrived on scene at the auto recycling yard just off Bridgeport Avenue, they found a stack of cars with their tires and fluid engulfed in flames, according to the Stratford Star. Fire officials told the Stratford Star that the firefighters were aggressive in attacking the flames, using foam to suppress it. The fire was eventually suppressed at around 6:30 p.m., according to the Stratford Star.

Officials are still determining the cause of the fire, which slowed traffic on Boston Post Road and the surrounding streets, as well as train traffic on the nearby Metro-North tracks, according to the Stratford Star.
