BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Bridgeport Police K9 officer Zeus and his partner Officer Ryan Mullenax successfully tracked down a 9-year-old boy with special needs who wandered away from home.

The Bridgeport Police Department is singing the praises of the two valued members of the force for the rescue.

The boy was reported missing by his mother at about 9 p.m. Sunday, July 9, from his home on Catherine Street. He had walked out the back door and was not in sight.

Officers called for the K9 unit.

Zeus took a sniff of an article of clothing the boy had worn earlier in the day, picked up the child’s scent, then put his training to work to track down the boy at 9:42 p.m., according to a statement from police spokeswoman Dalmarys Matos.

Zeus and Mullenax began the track from Catherine Street down Harral Avenue into Nanny Goat Park. They then traveled back to George Street, where the K9 unit found the boy.

A medical check determined he was healthy and uninjured. Mother and child were immediately reunited.

“This child would not have been found if not for the efforts of K9 Officer Mullenax and K9 Zeus," Chief Armando Perez said. "This is an example of the great work that our officers do on a daily basis. Incidents like this one often go unnoticed but they are an integral part of our team and all we do to serve our community.”

Zeus has been a part of the Bridgeport Police Department for over a year. In his time serving the Bridgeport community, Zeus has made 13 rescues.
