REDDING, Conn. -- Former Redding First Selectman Mary Anne Guitar died on Tuesday at the age of 95, according to the Redding Pilot.

Guitar served as first selectman from 1977 to 1989, after serving on the Board of Selectman from 1969 to 1975, the Redding Pilot reported. She also founded the Redding Land Trust and served as chairman of its Board of Trustees.

Redding First Selectman Julia Pemberton told the Redding Pilot that Guitar was a mentor to many in government and the community, and that she was instrumental in helping the town acquire open space. Guitar was dedicated to preserving Redding's natural beauty, and Pemberton urged residents to pay tribute to her legacy by enjoying the open space she worked so hard to protect, the Redding Pilot reported.

Information on services for Guitar has not yet been made available.
