Dimas Couto, 58, Soccer Coach At Bridgeport's Harding High

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — Dimas Couto, 58, a longtime soccer coach in Bridgeport, died Monday, Aug. 3, in Bridgeport Hospital with his family by his side.

He was born in Vila do Conde, Portugal, on April 15, 1957. Couto had a love and passion for soccer. He also helped young people obtain scholarships, and restored historic homes on the East Side of Bridgeport.

He loved to coach soccer and was the head coach for the Harding High School boys soccer team.

He is survived by his wife, Claudia (Costa) Couto; his children, Gabriella Couto and James Couto; his mother, Albertina Borges Couto; his three sisters, Maria (Lula) Couto, Helia (Ellie) Goncalves and husband Manuel, Cristina Couto; his mother- and father-in-law, Antonio and Maria Costa; a sister-in-law, Sindi DeGroat and husband Sean; and several nieces, nephews aunts, cousins and many friends.

He was predeceased by his father, Joaquim Lopes Couto, and a sister, Odette Couto.

Call hours will be on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. with a Maranatha Christian Service at 7 p.m. in the Parente-Lauro Funeral Home, 559 Washington Ave., Bridgeport. 

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Aug. 7, at 10 a.m. in St. Augustine Cathedral, 359 Washington Ave., Bridgeport. Interment will follow in St. Michael Cemetery, Stratford.
