TRUMBULL, Conn. -- The family of a woman, 20, who has Down syndrome is suing Trumbull, alleging she was "abandoned" on a field trip with the town's Educating Learners in Transition Environments program, according to the Connecticut Post.

A Trumbull family filed a lawsuit against the town, alleging their daughter was left alone on a field trip of a program for students with special needs in which she was enrolled.

The suit alleges she was left alone at the assembly point of the trip to Monroe YMCA, which was the Helen Plumb Building in Trumbull, said the Connecticut Post report.

Megan Gereda reportedly went to use the restroom in the building while the other students on the field trip were put in vans and went on the trip, according to the Connecticut Post.

Staff of the program realized she was missing while arriving at the field trip destination and returned to look for her, said the report.

Police found Gereda a mile and a half away "wandering the streets," the suit alleges, said the newspaper.
