Knitting Groups 'Yarn Bomb' Fairfield Library With Free Scarves, Mittens

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Some lucky passersby at the Fairfield Public Library are a little warmer today, thanks to an inventive "yarn bombing" by two local knitting groups.

Members of the Purls of Wisdom Knitting Group and the Sewing Salon gave away hundreds of free scarves, hats and mittens in the second annual Yarn Bombing at Fairfield Public Library.

On Sunday, members of the Sewing Salon and the Fairfield Woods Branch Library’s Purls of Wisdom Knitting Group tied 215 homemade scarves, two hats and six pairs of mittens on signs, benches and trees outside the downtown library.

Members have been working on the accessories since October. Each bore a tag reading “Want a Scarf — Take a Scarf — Stay Warm!”

The second annual yarn bombing was well tim-d after Saturday’s snowstorm and the frigid temperatures that followed.

The community project was well received and downtown walkers snapped cellphone photos of the few scarves still hanging around the library Monday afternoon.
