Tomlinson's, 1400 Noble Ave., Bridgeport, (203) 335-5296
Frank Talk: It’s been nearly 70 years since Harry Tomlinson, the 1930’s oceanside eatery’s original owner, died and his business was sold to Platon Vlamis, a Greek immigrant. The accents possessed by most of the then-non-English-speaking staff caused Tomlinson’s to be dubbed “The Greek’s,” a name which has stuck among some local folks to this day. But Tomlinson’s is a far cry from the food shack that required customers to stand in long lines in all sorts of weather, or the later version that was so tiny that they had to walk in one end, get their food, and walk out the other. It expanded to a modern building in the late-1990s with a big parking lot and now has drive-through service.
Top This: The Bridgeport institution serves Hummel dogs with the standard toppings. Perhaps in a nod to more health-conscious times, it has a turkey dog on the menu as well. But one piled heart-stoppingly high with chili, cheese, bacon and fried onions is such a customer fav that it’s been named “Top Dog.”
