Theatre For One Is Just The Ticket At Fairfield University

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Named by The New York Times Magazine as one of the 10 Best Theatre Events of 2015, mobile performance company Theatre for One brings their state-of-the-art performance space for one actor and one audience member to the Barone Campus Center at Fairfield University March 22 through 24.

The unique live theater experience is free and open to the public, and will take place daily between 12 and 6 p.m.

Conceived by Artistic Director Christine Jones and designed by LOT-EK architects, Theatre for One sets up in public spaces where audience members are invited to engage in a theatrical exchange in which an actor and audience member encounter each other as strangers in a suspended space.

In less than 10 minutes, the mobile and literal “black box” theater presents a unique and personal experience that is designed specifically for their venue. The group comes with a program of five or six short performance pieces, ranging from 3-minute plays to a magic act, which they cycle through.

Due to the unique and inevitable synergy that occurs between the audience member and performer in such an intimate space, no two people will see the same performance in the same way, and an audience member won’t see the same play twice.

This rare experience has not gone unnoticed; the 2010 Theatre for One performance in Times Square garnered the attention of The New York Times, which profiled Jones and her project in an article, “A Theater in Times Square With Seating for Just One.”

According to Jones, Theatre for One was ultimately born out of her obsession with how to distill “the relationship between performer and audience into a space private enough to feel extremely intimate, but safe enough to allow the audience member a full range of responses.”
