The film, "The Battle of Great Britain," will be shown on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Weston Public Library, 56 Norfield Road. Directed by Guy Hamilton, the film depicts the Battle of Britain, when in the summer and autumn of 1940 the British Royal Air Force defeated the German Luftwaffe, and so ended Hitler’s plan to invade England.
The Battle of Britain features some spectacular flying sequences and includes an all-star cast of Michael Caine, Trevor Howard, Lawrence Oliver, and Weston native Christopher Plummer.
A lecture, "The War in the Pacific," will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 7:30 p.m. at the Library. Capt. Kyle Hatzinger and Capt. Gregory Hope from West Point Military Academy will discuss “The War in the Pacific.”
The Allied militaries executed the Pacific War on a geographic scale that remains unparalleled in military history, leaving open literally hundreds of untold and unknown stories. By examining the war at the highest and lowest levels possible, a greater understanding of the vast conflict becomes evident. Hope and Hatzinger provide this balanced look, exploring the conflict's strategic elements as well as its individual stories in their talk.
Hatzinger is a 2006 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy. He served in the 502nd Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, which included deployment to Baghdad. Later he commanded D Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Cavalry, 1st Cavalry Division, which included deployment in Tikrit, Iraq, in 2011. After his company command, Hatzinger earned a master's in military history from the University of North Texas, and returned to West Point where he teaches in the Department of History.
Hope is also a 2006 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy. He was a tank platoon leader, and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2007. In 2011 he deployed with 1st Battalion, 5th Calvary, 1st Cavalry Division in support of Operation New Dawn, during which time he took command of C Company. Hope attended graduate school at Ohio State University where he earned a master's in military history. In 2015, he became an instructor in the Department of History at West Point.
