MONROE, Conn. -- The Edith Wheeler Memorial Library will present "Sodbusters & Colleges: The Winning of the West," Tuesday, Feb. 16.
Hamish Lutris, an associate professor of history at Housatonic Community College in Bridgeport, will discuss some of the rapid changes. In 1860, most of the Western plains were uninhabited by Americans. By 1890, the census revealed the frontier, where U.S. law did not hold sway, had disappeared. How did this happen in just 30 years?
This is the final talk in the Westward Movement Series, which has focused on immigration, technologies and political actions that made these changes possible.
The talk will begin at 6:30 p.m. The snow date is Tuesday, Feb. 23. To register, call 203-452-2850 or visit the library's website. The library is at 733 Monroe Turnpike, Monroe.
