"Roses are still the go-to flower on Valentine's Day," says Holly, who works at the shop. "Pink, red or white, the guys like to stay simple with roses."

Simple or extravagant, Valentine’s Day is big business from local stores to national retailers. Americans spent nearly $19 billion last year for Valentine’s Day and could spend close to $20 billion this year, according to fatwallet.com.

During the season, 250 million roses are produced. Many consumers opt for the red roses, which account for 40 percent of purchases, according to the site.
