According to owner — and Newtowner — Andy Delillo, “Newtown has a small-town aura. It’s everybody’s hometown. No big box retailers here. It’s the perfect community for Main Street Rx.”

Delillo opened the business with his wife, Diane, and son, Aj, making the venture a true family affair.

Don't expect glass showcases when you enter the store. Instead, you'll find wooden shelves and cabinets ordered from a local woodworking shop in Monroe, along with planked floors in muted colors.

Retail, said Delillo, will be low-key and highlight local products such as honey, candy and soap. In addition, the pharmacy will be full service, offering such services as flu shots, overseen by longtime pharmacist Roy Ciarlo, who trained and worked for CVS for 25 years.

According to Delillo, Main Street Rx’s advantage over national retailers is its personalized service and free delivery, a service he calls "a real boon for Connecticut’s seniors and shut-ins."

“Like our sister store in Boca Raton, the concept is to bring back that old-time pharmacy feeling with a homey vibe," he said.

The family is eager to play an active role in in the community, too, envisioning their new store as more than just a drop-off for prescriptions.

Later this month, the pharmacy is participating in an arts festival in Sandy Hook and sponsoring a NARCAN event at Plaza South to highlight anti-drug abuse awareness.

Main Street Rx is at 266 S. Main St., Newtown, 475-323-2100.
